80's and 90's Designer Eva Chun

Known as fashion designer, Eva Chun, Eva was born in Seoul, South Korea. At the age of 11, she was chosen by two great masters of Korean traditional watercolor, Byun Kwan Sik and Kim Eun Ho, as their protégé. But her training as a great artist was abruptly stopped as she had to come to the United States with her family. During her college years, she started to work for film production companies. But her true passion was art so she enrolled at the Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles.

At Otis, Eva put together a small collection of simple evening dresses and tailored suits and showed it to a buyer for Neiman Marcus. The buyer placed a sizeable order and that started her fashion company from her living room. As her collection received great reviews and high demand, she soon followed by opening a showroom and a manufacturing company. As her collection gained international success, selling to Bergdorf, Barney’s, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and many specialty boutiques in major cities around the world, Eva opened her flagship showroom in 550 Seventh Avenue in New York.  Eva Chun's clothes, priced from about $700 to $3,000.

Within a few years, she joined CFDA in 1991 and was touted as ‘one of the top five young designers in America’ by Bernadine Morris, fashion editor of The New York Times. Her designs have also appeared in numerous issues of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, the cover of Vanity Fair, as well as on the covers of Women’s Wear Daily. Many of her designs were photographed by eminent photographers like Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts. She was also a favorite designer to celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone and Angelica Houston to name a few.

While her career was flourishing in New York City, she met collector, designer and restaurateur (Tribeca, Mr. Chow , Michael Chow. They married in 1992.  Two years later, Eva left Seventh Avenue behind to have a child.

Since then with her husband, Michael, Eva has been collaborating on everything from expanding their business, to designing and collecting. Eva also serves on the Board of Trustees at the Los Angeles County Museum where she has founded and co-chairs an annual ‘Art + Film’ gala with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Although Eva’s been busy doing numerous endeavors, she continues to be very much in the fashion world and plans to return to work as a designer.

ART Jewelry

Arthur Pepper was in business from the late 1940's making jewelry signed Mode Art, and later, ART(c). The company became popular during the 1960's when they produced interpretations of ethnic Asian figural fashion jewelry, Egyptian revival large metal pectorals, Maltese crosses, and an entire line of jewelry with small enameled flowers. ART is a very collectible line and it's value will only increase with time.

In the August 2013 issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine, there is a Bottega Veneta bracelet that is a similar style for $5250 (shown on the left in photo below) to a bracelet by ART (shown on the right). Now of course, the bracelet is gorgeous, but who could afford it! Get the look for less with this Art bracelet.

The ART bracelet on the right has nine chains of varying size. The bracelet is signed on both ends of the bracelet. Clasp closure.    https://www.etsy.com/listing/156566892

Don Loper Beverly Hills

Don Loper was based in Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1960s. He designed costumes for several films and designed the outfits Gracie Allen wore on the Burns and Allen Show in the 1950's. Don Loper appeared as himself on the I Love Lucy show, when Lucy went to his exclusive boutique to purchase a dress.  She tried to convince Ricky that she needed a Don Loper dress to fit in with the Hollywood crowd. This episode of I Love Lucy starts with Lucy and Ethel going to the stylish [and very expensive!] Don Loper Salon. Lucy only has a $100 to spend on a new dress and has no idea that nothing there costs less than $500.

This vintage 1950's kelly green Don Loper Beverly Hills boxy jacket has fabric covered button closure on the front.  Flap pockets on the lower front.  Fully lined.  The collar is hand stitched onto the jacket.  Collectors item!

Mary McFadden Kaftan

Kaftans are one of the earliest forms of fashion, going back to the 14th century.  They became a part of the hippie fashion culture of the 60's and 70's, but have had a resurgence this year.  It takes a bold personality to wear them....not for the meek and shy!

Roberto Cavalli did fabulous kaftans in his spring/summer 2013 collection. They are works of art with gorgeous colors and flowy lines.
Just Cavalli 2013

This vintage Mary McFadden kaftan is from the early 80's.  It still has the original price tags on it. Great for a glamorous island getaway.   No time to travel?  Perfect way to look chic at home on a hot summer day.  Make a dramatic entrance at the pool by wearing it over your swimsuit.  Add a pair of Tori Burch sandals and you are ready to go!
